Frequently Asked Questions and Tips

Do I need to register, or can I just show up for class?

For classes at Madison Square Center for the Arts, just show up a few minutes early. Prior registration is recommended however, for classes at my home, so that class availability is assured.

I can't begin to do the pose demonstrated at the right; can I do yoga?

Absolutely! Yoga benefits people of all fitness levels. There are many variations or modifications to help you. If you continue to practice, chances are you'll be doing those difficult postures before you know it.

What do I wear to a yoga class?

Comfortable, stretchy clothing such as baggy pants and a shirt, leotard and footless tights, or workout capri pants or bike shorts and shirt. Be prepared to take off your socks and shoes.

Do I need special equipment?

You do not need to invest in costly equipment or clothes to do yoga. A few sticky mats and props are available for use during class for new students. We recommend that you purchase your own mat. You can now purchase basic yoga mats almost anywhere, though I do sell several very nice mats.

Will yoga conflict with my religious beliefs?

Although there is a strong spiritual component to the practice of yoga, it is based on techniques which are experiential and non-sectarian. It will only strengthen your faith. For those not interested in the spiritual benefits, yoga does not intrude.

Tips

  • Try not to eat right before class. If you need to eat, then eat lightly.
  • When you come in, please remove your shoes and leave them at the door ( it helps keep the floor clean and is in keeping with custom to respect our "Sacred space").
  • Please sign in when you enter and find your place.
  • Bring your mat. Remember to take your mat and other belongings with you after class; you will be very relaxed.
  • Please arrive on time, as late arrivals are disruptive. It's better to come late than to not come at all, though. If you find yourself coming into class late, please enter and find a space quietly. Allow yourself time to connect with your breath and do a few simple stretches before you merge with the rest of class.
  • If you have to leave early, please take the time 5 minutes before you leave to do your own Savasana (relaxation). This is the most important posture and shouldn't be skipped for anything!!
  • Finally, yoga is a discipline. It WILL change your life in so many ways, but you have to actually DO it. There will be many times that you don't feel like coming to class or that something else wants priority. Come to class even if you don't feel like it. You will either get revived by the first few warm-ups or we'll help you into some restorative alternatives. Many things will come along to test your resolve to take care of yourself. Make yoga a priority in your life and you will feel the difference.
